Details, Fiction and Beat Making
Originality is key to being a top producer. Making your own beats starts with your creativity, imagination, rhythm. It is not that you cannot get ideas from songs you hear, we have to start somewhere. We just do not want to make beats that sound exactly like another. Following a certain style of beats or standard pattern is one thing, completely copying other beats is plagiarism, just plain wrong.
The way to start your own beat is to think of a simple melody. Practice this by humming, singing. or on your keyboard if you already have your beat making software. This should be short, sweet and simple. When we are making beats, we do not want to over-do it, ever. Until you are producing and making your own money, keep it simple.
Once we have our melody in place, we start making it our own. Tweak the samples just slightly at the end or beginning. Adjust the pitch in several spots, even in the middle of a beat sample. Producing high quality beats means producing great, original pieces. We've all heard that certain beat over and over again.
After the melody is complete we can start with the main beat itself. We know how to make beats, either with the beats software, using your fingers and hands or your mouth to beatbox. Kick drum, hi go here hat, snare. These three can make a beat all by themselves. You start with the hi hat so it helps to stay on beat, then bring in the kicks and snares. Kicks are another easy sample to tweak. Change your pitch, adjust the volume, make sure it delivers a hard bass pound.
Bass samples always complete my music for me. This blends everything together and just makes making your beats easy. I find myself starting with bass, even before my melody, to make beats. It is just as easy to tweak bass samples as it is melody samples. Always use your gut feeling when producing your music. If you pluck the wrong key, it may not sound as bad as you think. You have to feel the music to make your own, staying original.
Small sounds like bells, wood, voice, tings and other effects add depth to what you produce. Simply popping some effect in with your snare can change an entire groove. Keeping with being creative, warping sounds or samples will help you produce a beat too. We do not have to use this method through and through every time, or really any time. I just want you to have a basic idea on using your mind to make your beat completely original, you.
